Reading Life: A Harmonious Blend of Passion and Humanity

Exploring Peng-Kai Chen's Award-Winning Public Space Design

Discover the unique design elements and inspiration behind Peng-Kai Chen's "Reading Life", an acclaimed public area design in a renowned hotel in Southern Taiwan. This design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, is a testament to modern simplicity and the power of natural amusement.

The "Reading Life" project, completed in 2018 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, spans a generous 1049 square meters. It is a public area in a hotel, designed to be a space of comfort, warmth, and engagement. The design is characterized by its extensive use of warm wood textures, creating an atmosphere of elegance and simplicity. The central circular area is a focal point, with arc-like book walls, suspended book installations, and ceiling illuminations drawing the eye.

Peng-Kai Chen's inspiration for this design was the harmony of passion and humanity that is inherent to Southern Taiwan. This theme, dubbed "Formula Life", is artistically represented throughout the space. The designer has also incorporated several island counters specifically for cooking activities, integrating life aesthetics and hotel facilities in a unique way. This blend of functionality and aesthetics is a defining feature of Chen's design.

The children's area is another noteworthy aspect of "Reading Life". Designed to be both enjoyable for children and trustworthy for parents, it adds a joyful element to the public space. The space beneath the large corner stair has been transformed into a treehouse-like environment, adding a playful and comforting touch. A tree on the wooden floors extends this appealing ambiance to the upper floors.

Chen faced several design challenges in creating "Reading Life". The task of distinguishing the reading and lounge areas within the large space was one such challenge. However, through the use of classy floors and stylish ceilings, Chen was able to effectively demarcate these areas. The designer's creative use of curved and mix-and-max materials further contributes to the space's relaxed, countryside, and LOFT styles.

In conclusion, "Reading Life" is a testament to Peng-Kai Chen's design prowess and innovative approach. The design's warm textures, engaging spaces, and thoughtful integration of functionality and aesthetics have earned it well-deserved recognition. It stands as a shining example of how design can enhance public spaces, making them more engaging, comfortable, and enjoyable for all.
